Volleyball

Volleyball is an Olympic sport. It is played at a lot of schools. There is indoor volleyball or beach volleyball. In high school there are 2-3 different teams usually. There’s a freshman team, junior varsity, and varsity. Varsity is the highest level for high school. One school’s team plays another schools team, like many other sports.

Each team has 6 players. The teams are separated by a net that just goes over the average players finger tips. A player on one of the teams begins a rally by serving the ball from behind the back line of the court and into the other team's side. The receiving team must not let the ball touch the ground and they have to try to get the ball up in the air too the setter. They may touch the ball as many as three times. The setter sets the ball up on the second touch for a hitter to spike the ball to the other side.

On February 9, 1895, William G Morgan, created a new game called Mintonette as a fun thing to be played preferably indoors and by any number of players. The game is like tennis and handball. Mintonette was designed to be a less rough than basketball, but still being athletic.

The first rules, made by William G Morgan, said you need a net 6 ft 6 in high, a 25×50 ft court, and the number of players didn’t matter. There was no limit to the number of ball contacts for each team before sending the ball to the other side of the court. If someone messed up their serve, they could have a second try. The ball was not allowed to hit the net. If that happened than the other team got the point and the ball to start another rally. After a guy named Alfred Halstead noticed the players “volley” at the games first match in 1896, the game quickly became known as volleyball. Volleyball rules were changed a little bit and the game spread around the country to YMCAs and other places.

When the ball contacts the floor in the court or that team made a mistake, the team that did not mess up gets a point, if they served that ball or not. The team that won the point serves to begin the next rally. If the same team that served wins the point than the same player serves again. When the other team gets a point after the other team serve then they rotate in a special rotation. Whoever gets to 25 points first, wins. But you have to win by two points.

Volleyball is an American pastime. People have been enjoying it since William G Morgan invented it in 1895.It spread over the United States pretty fast. The rules are pretty simple too most people. As rules keep changing, it will become more fun and challenging.
